NAN Women’s Council Issues Statement of Support for those Struggling with Mental Health
THUNDER BAY, ON: The Nishnawbe Aski Nation Women’s Council and delegates have issued the following statement of support and hope for people struggling to cope with mental health issues:
“We have heard too many stories of people who are struggling within our communities and in urban centres. We want to offer our guidance and encouragement to our people to support each other and build confidence within our Nation.
This mental health crisis has caused unprecedented levels of grief, stress, and anxiety that has exhausted our ability to manage. Many people are struggling to deal with suicide and other tragic losses of life. Crisis response at the community level has reached a critical point.
High rates of unnatural deaths, mental health issues, and addictions – especially the opioid pandemic – have exhausted existing resources, services, and limited funding. This situation has created an environment of hopelessness and helplessness.
To those who are struggling, we encourage you not to give up. Helping each other has always been our way. In times of need we have always come together in the best interest of our communities. We need to acknowledge that we all have a responsibility to help each other.
To our federal and provincial Treaty partners, we implore you to work with our leaders on an urgent basis to provide supports and resources, such as trauma-informed healing centres and after-care programs, to preserve the life and dignity of our people.
Please remember that there is someone who cares. We love you and we are praying for you.”
This statement was issued during the NAN Women’s Gathering, held February 21-23, 2023, in Thunder Bay.
The NAN Women’s Council ensures that women’s and family issues, and their priorities and needs, are identified, and addressed.
