NAN Executive Council Mourns Passing of Matachewan First Nation Chief Jason Batisse

THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, sends prayers and condolences to Matachewan First Nation following the passing of Chief Jason Batisse:

“We are very saddened to hear that our dear friend has begun his journey to the Spirit World. We send our deepest condolences to his partner Sam, his children, and beloved grandson. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community of Matachewan First Nation.

Jason was proud of his Anishnawbe heritage and generously shared his knowledge of culture and traditional teachings, especially with youth. He was an avid hunter and taught his family and others how to live off the land in the way of our ancestors.

He dedicated his political career to creating a better quality of life for his community. Through his leadership, Matachewan forged partnerships with industry that helped secure infrastructure development, and economic and employment opportunities.

A proud father and grandfather, Jason is fondly remembered for his commitment to family and for the friendship and kindness he shared so freely with others. We will miss our friend dearly, and we pray for the Creator to guide him on his Spirit Journey.”

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. The family has requested privacy at this time. Please join us in prayer for his family and the Matachewan community.

Matachewan First Nation is an Ojibway community located in Treaty No. 9 territory in the Timiskaming District, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Matachewan and 60 kilometers west of Kirkland Lake.
