Education Jurisdiction Summit 2024
April 9, 2024 @ 12:00 pm – April 10, 2024 @ 9:00 pm
Delta Hotel – Thunder Bay, ON
Education Jurisdiction Summit 2024
Most First Nations, including NAN member communities, are governed by the Indian Act. Elected Chiefs and councils make decisions, pass by-laws, and create policies in a limited number of areas. In contrast, through negotiated self-government agreements like the Education Jurisdiction Agreement, First Nations will be able to make their own laws and regulations over education.
NAN’s Education Jurisdiction Program would like to invite you to join this year’s Education Jurisdiction Summit, on the topic First Nation law-making.
With special guest Dr. Leo Baskatawang. Dr. Leo Baskatawang is an Anishinaabe scholar from Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation in Treaty #3 territory. He is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, and is the author of Reclaiming Anishinaabe Law: Kinamaadiwin Inaakonigewin and the Treaty Right to Education. Leo’s research interests include: Indigenous Education and Law, Treaties, UNDRIP, and the processes of reconciliation and decolonization.
