NAN Supports Neskantaga First Nation, calls for Coordinated Response to On-going Health Crisis

THUNDER BAY, ON: The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Executive Council has issued the following statement of support for the leadership of Neskantaga First Nationfollowing their call for an immediate emergency response to the community’s ongoing health crisis:

“The situation in Neskantaga is very alarming and requires an urgent, coordinated response from all levels of government. We are very concerned for the wellbeing of not only the members who remain in the community, but also for those who have been evacuated. Chief Gary Quisess and Council have been clear about their needs, and they deserve firm commitments to effectively manage this situation and secure the necessary on-the-ground supports without delay.

We understand that federal and provincial officials are working closely with the community, and we appreciate their efforts. But this is a crisis situation, and the people of Neskantaga need to be assured that help is on the way. We urge all government agencies and everyone involved to prioritize their responses to ensure that the immediate needs of the community are being met, and that plan of action is implemented to address the long-term health needs of the community.

We will continue to support evacuated members and have ensured community leadership that we will do everything we can to assist. We appreciate the efforts of the Matawa First Nations Management and the many others who are providing much-needed care for the evacuees and the members who remain in the community.”

Neskantaga First Nation declared a State of Emergency on April 13, 2025, due to the disruption of health services after flooding in the community’s only nursing station. More than 150 members have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and the community is requesting that all vulnerable members, especially children, be evacuated immediately.

Yesterday, Neskantaga leadership identified four priorities for immediate attention to secure the necessary health supports and services, and ensure the health and safety of the community during this crisis.
