NAN congratulates 2019 NAPS award recipients

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, congratulates recipients of the 2019 Police Awards as Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) celebrates 25 years of service to NAN First Nations this week.

“I congratulate all of these outstanding individuals for the dedication and professionalism they display every day maintaining the safety and well-being of our communities,” said Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler. “This is an exciting time for NAPS. There has been a tremendous amount work by the board, management and our Chiefs to ensure that NAPS will become the fully mandated police service our leaders envisioned 25 years ago. Our officers serve with pride and distinction and we are committed to ensuring that our officers have the resources they need.”

Officer of the Year was awarded to Const. Marc Beauparlant (Central Region), Sgt. Gil Carey (North East Region), and Const. Chris Head (North West Region) during a gala last night. Other awards including Bravery, Lifesaving and Community Service were presented at a ceremony at NAPS headquarters today.

NAPS is the largest First Nation police service in Canada and the second largest in North America, employing more than 134 uniform officers and 30 civilians. Based in Thunder Bay, NAPS serves 35 communities across NAN territory, which encompasses nearly two-thirds of the Province of Ontario.

Officers are sworn constables with authority throughout Ontario. Headquarters are in Thunder Bay with regional offices in Cochrane and Sioux Lookout. The service is governed by the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Board comprised of representatives of the seven NAN Tribal Councils
