NAN mourns passing of Jowin Quequish

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, shares heartfelt condolences following the passing of former North Caribou Lake First Nation Chief and NAN Elder Jowin Quequish:

“We very were saddened to learn of the passing our dear friend last night and our thoughts and prayers are with Jowin’s family, friends, and the entire Round Lake community. Jowin believed in a better future for his community and the people of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and could always be counted on to share words of encouragement. He was selfless in his desire to improve his community and strengthen our Nation, and his wisdom and kindness will be greatly missed. This loss is especially difficult during the holiday season, but we hope that that his family and community finds comfort knowing that the example Jowin set will continue to inspire leaders for generations to come.”

At 90 years of age at his passing, Jowin remained active in his community. He served for many years as Chief and was a long-serving member of the NAN Elder’s Council.

Details on funeral services have yet to be announced.

North Caribou Lake First Nation or Weagamow First Nation, also known as Round Lake, is a remote Oji-Cree community located approximately 320 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout
