NAN Mourns Passing of Long-serving Moose Cree First Nation Leader Earl Cheechoo
THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, expresses heartfelt condolences following the passing of Earl Cheechoo, a long-serving leader and former Deputy Chief of Moose Cree First Nation:
“We are very saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend. Our prayers and condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire community of Moose Cree First Nation. May the Creator guide him as he begins his Spirit Journey.
As a long-serving leader, Earl helped guide Moose Cree First Nation through many challenges and opportunities to move forward as a people and as a community. He was well-known for prioritizing the health, safety and well-being of others, especially in times of crisis. His care and compassion were reflected through his outstanding leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and many initiatives to improve the health and security of community members.
Earl had a strong connection with his ancestors and was well-versed in their teachings. He took on the responsibility of passing down this knowledge to younger generations through stories that define who they are as Cree. He reminded us that the land cares for us, and the time we spend on the land is valuable to our heritage.
He worked hard to preserve traditional values in the care of our members. He was a founding member of our Chiefs Committee on Children, Youth and Families, and a strong advocate to advance the priorities of our members and communities. We will miss his leadership and friendship.”
In addition to his years as Deputy Chief, Earl also served as president of Payukotayno: James and Hudson Bay Family Services. He was instrumental in the development of a protocol agreement with Moose Cree to support the safety and well-being of children and families. He also led initiatives to support victims of crime and reclaim Cree traditional values.
A funeral service will take place Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m. Please join us by keeping Earl’s family and friends in your prayers during the difficult days ahead.
