NAN statement on Black Lives Matter

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, has issued the following statement in support of a demonstrations against racism and injustice following the tragic death of George Floyd at the hand of police last week:

“We are outraged at the senseless and vicious murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police. While we are encouraged by the arrest of the four officers involved, we are disheartened that anti-black racism by police continues to result in the loss of black lives.

We strongly condemn the violent responses by police against protesters that the world is witnessing. We support all those who seek to end systemic racism in policing, and those who fight for civil rights, equality and racial justice.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation stands in unity against racism and injustice in all of its forms.”

Demonstrations have been held around the world as a show of support for Black Lives Matter following the death of George Floyd, who was tragically killed while in the custody of Minneapolis police.
