NAN to welcome secondary school students to Thunder Bay

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox will join with First Nation and municipal leaders, service providers and other community officials to welcome secondary school students from NAN First Nations to Thunder Bay tomorrow.

“All young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential throughout their education. Education is the key to success, and we thank our municipal partners for creating a supportive and welcoming environment,” said Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox, who holds the education portfolio. “For many students this is their first time away from their community. These orientations are a great way to help students make the transition to an urban center. We appreciate everyone who participates in these events for contributing to the safety and well-being of our youth.”

The Thunder Bay NAN Student Orientation will be held Tuesday, September 10, at the Valhalla Inn from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with food and refreshments. More than 40 local service providers will have booths for students to learn the services available to them while they are at school.

Sioux Lookout area students were welcomed with an orientation at Pelican Falls High School last week. Students attending secondary school in Timmins will be welcomed with an orientation event on September 11 at the Senator Hotel & Conference Centre.

Student orientations were launched by NAN and the City of Thunder Bay in 2014. They have since expanded to include Sioux Lookout and Timmins. The student orientation events are open to all NAN students attending secondary schools in urban centers.
